**What brought you to cfd?**
I had started at a CrossFit gym pre-covid and loved the methodology. But during intern year I started working out in my garage because my hours were too busy to get to scheduled classes. After intern year as my hours improved and the temperature got colder in my uninsulated garage I figured it was time to get back to working out in a community setting. My wife and other friends worked out at CFD and loved it, so I went in to give it a try and really enjoyed the programming and community.
**What is your fitness background?**
I was very active in a lot of sports growing up and played football and wrestled in high school. After organized sports I would just workout on my own in the weight room until I found a CrossFit gym in Cleveland heights in 2018 when I was looking to learn Olympic lifts.
**What is your favorite cfd memory?**
We bring our son to some of the workouts and I like to use him as a medicine ball substitute for wall balls.
Getting my first muscle up after Randy showed me how (while wearing his crocs).
**What is your “why”?**
As a physician in physical medicine and rehab, we are always trying to maximize our patients function throughout their life regardless of ability. When I came to CrossFit I discovered they had the same goal but just through a different approach. That motivated me to get my CF-L1 and adaptive training certification so I can try to improve people’s function both inside and outside of the clinic.
**Personal life update**
I’m in my last year of residency in PM&R at the Cleveland Clinic and just matched into their Interventional Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine fellowship for an additional year of training. My wife and I are trying to potty train our 2.5 year old and we’re open to any recommendations.
‼️We are very excited to bring you this groundbreaking news‼️
You may now be entitled to reimburse yourself 100% of your monthly CrossFit Distinction membership and supplement purchases using your HSA or FSA account. This is HUGE!
Exercise as medicine is finally getting the recognition it deserves and you may now be able use your tax-free HSA and FSA dollars to help pay for CrossFit and supplement purchases.
TrueMed has partnered with CrossFit to make the approval process simple. Use the link below for a quick “How to…” guide.

Get to know Connor Olczak!
**What brought you to cfd?**
Coach Kyle was my first ever lifting coach back in 2012, maybe 2011. When I stopped playing football at John Carroll in 2017, coming to CFD where Kyle was the head coach was a no brainer.
**What is your fitness background?**
I grew up playing sports, mostly football.
**What is your favorite cfd memory?**
Watching people grow both mentally and physically inside of the gym over time is awesome. It’s not about where you start, it’s about how you work to get to where you want to be!
**What is your “why”?**
Challenging workouts and a great community is excellent for my physical and mental health. Sure, some workouts may suck, but doing it along side a bunch of good people makes it easier (wouldn’t be able to do half of the WODs by myself hahah)
**Personal life update**
Outside of the gym, you can find me with my friends or my dog! I also work with hospitals across the country to help them recruit neurologists.
Meet Natalie Defranco!
**What brought you to cfd?**
My manager, Jacqui introduced me to CFD and it was my first time trying CrossFit!
**What is your fitness background?**
I was a cheerleader for Kent state and I studied exercise physiology where my passion for fitness developed. Once I graduated college, I kept myself active by going to the gym, playing rec sports and getting out with my dog.
**What is your favorite cfd memory?**
I don’t have a specific memory but watching myself and others grow and develop in the gym and picking up new movements/skills I’ve never done (toes to bar, rope climbs, handstand push-ups, etc)
**What is your “why”?**
I remember those that don’t have the opportunity to do things like this or the ones that never got the chance. I love challenging myself in different ways. I love the physical and mental push.
**Personal life update**
Not much of an update! I keep very busy with my job and my dog.
Get to know Jennie Velez!
** What brought you to cfd?**
I started CrossFit in summer of 2022 after being on active duty. I needed something to occupy my mind and I had no idea what CrossFit was. I was in good physical shape but I wanted to feel stronger, mentally and physically. It helped me transition back to civilian life.
**What is your fitness background?**
I didn’t “get in shape” until I enlisted in the Navy. Before that most of my activity involved dancing for fun or Zumba workouts but not much cross training and definitely not running. I lost 50 pounds at one point.
** What is your favorite cfd memory?**
Favorite CFD memory would be the Veteran’s Day workout last November. My abs were sore for approximately one week. 😂
** What is your “why”?**
My why is to set an example for my 9 year old daughter, always.
**Personal life update**
I’m transitioning to a manager role at my full-time job while balancing the duties of being in the Reserves and being mom!
Get to know Caroline DeCicco!
**What brought you to cfd?**
I always wanted to try crossfit because I liked that it incorporated everything. CFD was the closest gym to me but I quickly fell in love with the people and atmosphere from day 1.
**What is your fitness background?**
I played soccer and basketball in highschool and would lift during my off-seasons and in college.
**What is your favorite cfd memory**
Everyday at CFD is amazing but I love Thursday morning open gyms when Krissy, Kyle, and I are just lifting.
**What is your “why”**
In crossfit you don’t have to be great at one thing, you just have to be good at a lot of things. Going to CFD allows me to be a better version of myself. It’s my time of the day to let everything go and just work on me.
Personal life update:
I am a junior at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. After school I want to work in the NICU…and maybe be a crossfit coach on the side :)
TRANSFORMATION TUESDAY!
Shoutout to Tony Dominic who has been working hard at CFD! Pictured is Tony holding the amount of weight he’s lost!
He recently hit a weight loss milestone, -20% Body Weight / down 70 Pounds! When Tony began his weight loss journey he was 350 lbs. Currently he is 276.8 lbs!
Not only did Tony’s weight go down, his quality of life improved tremendously.
Here are just a few fun facts he recently shared with us.
- He went from 6 Rx medications to control his Type 2 Diabetes to 3 Rx medications.
- He has been able to reduce the amount of my daily long-acting insulin injection by 58%.
- His blood sugar is more in control than it ever has been.
- He had to buy all new clothes for work.
He accomplished all of this through changing everything about his diet, eating at least one salad a day, started CrossFit, and has been tracking his progress through data and science to support his decisions.
Tony wants everyone to know that “Support comes from people and places that you do not expect…share your story…”
However, he isn’t done yet! Tony’s next weight loss goal is to lose 35 more lbs!
Make sure you give Tony a BIG HIGH FIVE when you see him next!
WAY TO GO!!!
Shout out to Kelli Childs! She’s been working hard!
“If you’ve seen me around the gym you’ve probably noticed I’m a smaller person these days! On the left I started CrossFit September 2021 - and I was always a “half ass” CrossFit person. Didn’t connect with anyone, didn’t do open gyms, vaping, drinking - just generally non healthy. Fast forward to September 2022 when I started 75 hard and started giving CrossFit the chance it deserves. February 2023 I’ve lost 20 pounds, I’m crushing CrossFit PR’s (I’m almost to mostly Rx workouts!), I’ve made a crew of friends, and I quit vaping.”
Special shout outs to Kyle, Krissy, Mel & Zak - who all pushed me and supported me at every stage.
Here’s to my goal in 2023 of competing in a CrossFit competition!
Get to know Mia Effron!
**What brought you to CFD?**
My sister, Trudie went to CFD while she was in high school and loved it.
**What is your fitness background?**
I’ve played soccer all my life and continue to play varsity in high school. I also have always loved going to the gym and doing a wide variety of exercise.

Doing Saturday morning workouts with my sister, specifically doing bench press and dripping sweat all over her when I spot her.
**What is your “Why”?**
I love fitness and exercise and pushing my body to new limits.
**Personal life update**
I am a junior at orange high school. I’m currently studying in a nursing program and looking into travel nursing after high school.

**What brought you to CFD?**
My friend got me to start doing CrossFit when we were coaching football together. We started doing workouts through an app called through MyWOD so s/o Niko. I got a full time job in Beachwood and looked up some gyms online and CFD stood out to me. Did my intro and the rest was history.
**What is your favorite CFD memory?**
Honestly it’s just how everyone treated me when I 1st started coming to the gym. Everyone was so kind and welcoming. I felt like I had been going to CFD for 20 years. I’ve been to some other gyms and that really wasn’t the case. The CFD community is really something special and I’m happy to be apart of it. I dont live close to the gym, but I can’t picture myself anywhere else!
**What is your athletic background?**
Played football and baseball growing up so I was familiar with some of the CrossFit movements like cleans. The gymnastics movements are new but I’m really starting to enjoy them.
**What is your “why?”**
My “why” is my family and friends. I’ve always tried to make a positive impact on their lives. I like putting a smile on their face when I see them bc it brings me happiness.
**Personal life update**
I’m getting married to my smoking hot fiancé in August! Looking forward to celebrating our big day with family and friends!

**What brought you to CFD?
I was first introduced to Crossfit while living in Nashville. We moved to Cleveland about 5 years ago and I was trying out different Crossfit gyms in the area to find a good fit. After 1 visit, I knew I found my new Crossfit home.
**What is your fitness background?
Always been an active outdoors person - primarily distance running, hikes, rock climbing, and mountaineering. I initially started Crossfit to supplement and help train for big outdoor climbs and adventures.
**Favorite CFD moment?
Pretty much anytime Kyle gives a demonstration on how NOT to do a movement. He always cracks me up with his hilarious renditions of "don't do this..."
**What is your "Why"?
Crossfit at CFD is a way for me to not just gain physical strength but also helps train the mind to push beyond what I thought I could do. The coaches at CFD are exceptional at positive encouragement and help to push me towards new challenges and goals. My time at CFD has also helped me to get and stay in shape for some epic climbing trips, with the most recent being a week of rock and ice climbing in the North Cascades (Forbidden Peak - West Ridge route).
**Personal life update? Heading off to Spain in late march to celebrate my 42nd birthday.
**Favorite Crossfit movement: Box jumps
**Least favorite Crossfit movement: OH Squat
